It isn't too from from landfall, it just became a category 4, there have already been tornadoes formed, and this is just the beginning of what looks to be a week long storm.

So the NWS said 25 inches of rain fell near Houston in 24 hours, and that beats the all time state record in all but four states (saw a tweet about this but I don't have enough posts to post links.

On top of that, the Euro model for the fifth time expects the storm to head back into the Gulf, re-intensify for a bit, and turn and make a near or direct hit on Houston. Another 24-30 inches will fall on top of what has already fallen by next Thursday. This is so bad.

The death toll is up to 8 now Sad.

There also appears to be rotation in the center of the storm, so it appears to be getting stronger again.

Irma's predicted to reach Cat 4 by next Thursday. Below is the spaghetti prediction model:

The chances of the US getting hit again are unfortunately high if this model holds true and Irma holds to a center tack.

Wow, I just saw that this storm is already a Category 2. It's already expected to intensify to a Category 3 in 12 hours.

They're also tracking the possibility of a second storm forming behind Irma (would be named Jose if it develops into a tropical storm).

I also think this thread should become a general Hurricane thread for the season.

It was just upgraded to a Category 3....in much less time than expected.

That makes two major Hurricanes within a week.

Irma has winds up to 185 mph, which ties it for the second fastest sustained winds ever recorded (5 mph behind Allen).
