Lots of misconceptions about this district here. Any discussion about this district is meaningless without considering the immense power and influence wielded here by George Norcross. He is nominally a Democrat but is loyal to no party. Norcross had LoBiondo in his pocket for virtually his entire tenure. He owns the Philadelphia Inquirer (incredibly popular and trusted here) and ergo has a firm grip on the news coverage residents in this district get. Murphy has gone a long way towards reducing Norcross' power, but the 2019 midterms demonstrated how much he is still capable of.

Van Drew has always been a favorite of his, but Norcross is an adept political manager and will probably have no issue throwing him under the bus if it begins to appear that Van Drew has caused enough problems for himself that he can't be saved (and he does appear to have really stepped in it and poorly managed the PR aspects of this in every imagineable way). But if he's salvageable I fully expect the full weight of the machine to be behind him.

Unions in Atlantic City also have significant influence here in a manner similar to Las Vegas, but in a somewhat diluted way since they are specific to one corner of the district rather than virtually the entire economy.
