Saw this today. I couldn't believe it was the Edison I live right next to, but then I remembered how racist New Jersey really is (one of the reasons I left the state actually).

Anyways, here's the flyer:

- snip disgusting flyer -

Born and raised in NJ, I really dont think NJ is all that racist. Its one of the most diverse states in the country.

Perhaps, but New Jersey definitely has its share of deplorables. I've been the receiving end of anti-Asian bigotry multiple times.

I also wonder what our usual anti-immigration activists have to say about this. Because surely this isn't about "just the illegals" or about "economic concerns only."

Watch it come out that these two candidates created these revolting fliers to gain name recognition and appeal due to the backlash

I'd laugh my ass off if that were the case

Anyway obviously these are disgusting either way, just odd that they were created anonymously.

That is a distinct possibility, as have many others on the Internet thought, but I don't think it's as likely as the straightforward scenario. First, would they risk the backlash if they're caught? Second, they're up for re-election; I don't know if they have any challengers, but I wouldn't think there's as big of a need for name recognition to pull off inane stunts like these.

I remember the anti-Muslim flyers that were doled out in some towns after Trump's election, so some racist mailing these flyers seems extremely plausible to me.

is NJ really better than NE then

It's a homage to an old Atlas thread.

This wouldn’t have happened if Democrats were in favor of trade protectionism.

If I think what I think you're doing (i.e. satire) - sure, point taken.

Otherwise - What the heck does trade protectionism do with this? The ease at which some people dismiss racial and cultural resentment as purely economic anxiety is troubling, to say the least.

I'm next door to this town, and this has been brewing for a long time. I'm not surprised it's spilled over and gotten this ugly.

Indeed. It's one of these things where native White residents freak out once they realize that they're - gasp - less than 50 percent of the population.

For reference, Edison is 47.2% Asian and 34.9% White, so the ship has sailed a long time ago.

Anyways, you are right at this brewing for a long time, not just in Edison but throught the whole state. Besides my own personal experiences, such racism included local talk radio stations freely dispensing with anti-Asian and anti-Hispanic racial slurs and TIME columnist Joel Stein writing about Edison's growing Indian-American population in an "insular and misguided" way. More recently you had the mock slave auction in Maplewood and a teacher who has recently returned to work (!) after telling students to speak American.

Geez, I think I made New Jersey seem more racist than Alabama!
