Since 1856, Upstate New York has voted the same as Vermont in every presidential election except 1912 and 2016.

It has sided with Maine in every election except 1968 and 2016.

Define upstate New York...

Based on my calculations, Upstate New York voted Dem in 2016 by 73049 votes.

I defined it as everything north of Westchester and Rockland counties, although I could see Orange, Putnam and Dutchess counties as being downstate now. It's hard to define the border since it's shifted north over time as NYC sprawls.

Despite a 33-point swing against the Democrat in 1964 and an additional 8-point swing in 1968, There were 4 Nixon-Johnson counties (Long, Towns, Union, and Whitfield) and one Goldwater-Humphrey county (Chatham) in Georgia.
