Portman is too old-fashioned, too moderate for the GOP.

"Too moderate".

He may not be Jim Jordan, but he's not a Susan Collins either. From what I know Portman is pretty conservative.

yeah he's pretty conservative, he just has that moderate personality/look that swing voters seem to really dig. He's also a workhorse in the senate, which you don't see with ideologues.

What I'm trying to say is you can't compare him to Susan Collins or Brian Fitzpatrick. He'd be a viable candidate. Conservative enough for the primaries, but not an ideologue who'd struggle in the general.
