Until we get a vaccine or a very strong treatment that will reduce the risk of mortality to a very low level socially distancing in masks in public are going to be a thing. This is kind of why I'm hoping that the Oxford vaccine ends up working because it works so we can get a vaccine by September life can start to go back to normal around election time and for the holidays.

but until either one of those two things happen we just have to accept we're going to live in a new reality

The idea that any vaccine will be widely available before next year is crazy. Even if production started to ramp up while being tested, the logistics involved in vaccinating everyone quickly would prevent that.

IIRC isn't one of the vaccines already being mass produced in case it ends up proving effective so that a lot is ready to go ASAP?

Alachua County, Fla., has repealed its mask directive. But police say nobody was ever cited under it anyway.

*sigh*

Aaaand this is why I'm gonna end up being made to take my classes in the fall online. Thanks so f**king much, Gainesville!

Lol children don’t get sick from this but nice try
This is the most classless disgusting post I've seen in a while. For some reason you've been in my good books recently, but WOW.
It's an objective fact, pretty much all children are asymptomatic when infected with the virus.

Children being asymptomatic doesn't mean children can't spread the virus, which is what the masks are meant to prevent.

If it's a hot-button issue in America, then you can almost be sure that most of the accounts - especially the extreme right-leaning accounts - are produced & monitored in a troll farm, likely from Russia or Iran.

Their sole purpose is to cause chaos among Americans, further fracturing a system that's already fraught with discord.

The jobs report probably ends any likelihood of another stimulus bill.

I don't understand how the WH can take this as evidence that more stimulus is unnecessary. We're still at 13% unemployment & the unemployment benefits of the prior stimulus package expire at the end of the month. Doing nothing more would still be terrible for the economy.

It's stupid & political idiocy to take this jobs number & claim victory & that the worst is over. But this administration is full of idiots, so that's exactly what they're gonna do.

Go Joe!
He didn't seem to get much crowd reaction.

The speech was given in front of a small crowd, in accordance with public health/social distancing guidelines. Makes sense, given he - unlike the incumbent President - actually knows how to responsibly run a campaign in light of the current circumstances.

How many individuals in this small crowd?

Just a handful of PA families who'd met with Biden to tell him that the ACA had helped them access life-saving health care & avoid financial hardships, in addition to the reporters present.

The wording here is weird.  Is on-premises consumption of other food/drink still allowed?  you can't just stand around drinking beer?

And does this count restaurants? Or just "bars," aka places were alcohol makes up 50+% of sales?

Our recall statutes don't provide for a gubernatorial recall.

Nothing to see here: just runaway infections in a state of 20 million people.

Remember, NYC locked down at 3,500 cases a day & peaked at 11,000. We're almost at 10k with no lockdown in sight.

Remember, NYC locked down at 3,500 cases a day & peaked at 11,000. We're almost at 10k with no lockdown in sight.

In fairness to the people that say "testing is going up," testing has actually gone up. IIRC back then NYC had something like a 50% positivity rate, with fewer tests. Undoubtedly if they had as many tests as we have now, they would then have found more cases. Whereas yesterday, the positivity rate in Florida was "only" 18%. "Only," I say...

That is just to say, while the situation in Florida is undoubtedly bad and is going to get worse in the near term, you are not (at least not yet) necessarily in a worse position than NYC was. It is also is a good thing that cases have a younger median age. However, we should all remember that NYC has a median age of 35.8 as compared to 37.7 nationally (and 42.2 in Florida), so if/when the virus continues to spread more widely in Florida and the median age of infections rises to better reflect the population, things will get worse... And potentially if we are not careful, quite a bit worse than they are were in NYC, if the virus eventually rips through Florida's senior population.

Fair. But yeah, as you make clear, Florida is still incredibly concerning, & no less so with restaurants, gyms, beaches, & theme parks all remaining fully open here. Hell, Disney World will be opening up in a few weeks. Short of prohibiting bars from serving alcohol, nothing is actually being done to make a difference in further limiting the spread. If they're allowed to proceed, then the 4th of July celebrations will surely cause yet another explosion in cases.

Weird. If only there was something we could put over our mouths & nose that'd help stop the transmission of an airborne virus. Anybody got any ideas?

Would typicals masks actually be effective against an airborne virus?  I thought the whole reason people thought masks were effective was that the coronavirus droplets were too large to fit through a mask.  But if they are just completely mixed with the air we breathe, wouldn’t they escape a mask just as easily as the air does?

But masks do seem effective, so I’m a little skeptical of the this new “alert”.

Masks are effective for airborne aerosols:

Quote
Considering infected subjects (i.e., source), the expiration range of SARS-CoV-2 aerosols can be effectively attenuated by any mask. Thus, homemade cloth masks should be promoted for use during the pandemic, particularly in countries currently experiencing so-called 'mask shortages'.
