Yes, people like Rudy, Mitt, & McCain definitely would've mounted primary challenges against him. Hell, if he even loses one primary too many, he probably drops out LBJ-style.

How many electoral votes would W have gotten if he survived the primary?

IMO, 138 to Obama's 400 (everything he actually won + GA, MO, MT, & the Dakotas), at most.
