Why should people whose presence in the U.S. is illegal be allowed to study at a university that receives government funding?

Ideological insanity. Marx was wrong on many things, but he was spot on that ideology can make people act in strange ways.

Or perhaps it's because we don't believe that, simply because someone lacks proper documentation, they should be denied access to a university education. Most people in these circumstances are the children of undocumented immigrants who brought them to America as underage children, which is hardly their fault. Even if they come to America "illegally," I hardly see that as a reason to treat them as less deserving than someone who had the random chance of being born in America.

If you want the privileges of living in America then you have to accept the responsibilities of being a legal citizen. Illegal immigrants are extremely hard to tax, especially for property and income which typically contribute to schools and universities. Why should legal, tax-paying citizens have to carry the burden of increased university attendance on behalf of people who aren't either of those things.

I'm all for amnesty and immigration. Countless studies show it benefits America greatly and education is a basic right of all American citizens but people seeking the advantages of living in America should have to take on the burdens of living in America just like everyone else.
