After my Napoleon's marshals, I try this one.
A small one but with very different characters and periods.

Joseph JOFFRE (1916)
Ferdinand FOCH (1918)
Philippe PETAIN (1918, dismissed 1945)
Joseph Simon GALLIENI (1921 posthumous)
Louis Hubert Gonzalve LYAUTEY (1921)
Marie Emile FAYOLLE (1921)
Michel Joseph MAUNOURY (1923 posthumous)
Jean de LATTRE de TASSIGNY (1952 posthumous)
Philippe LECLERC de HAUTECLOCQUE (1952 posthumous)
Alphonse JUIN (1952)
Marie-Pierre KOENIG (1984 posthumous)

As we've got a short list, rules are simple:
in each round, vote for the marshal you want to eliminate.
Of course, the marshal with the biggest total of votes is dismissed.
When there is a tie, previous votes will break it. If there is a new tie, I, Marshal of this survivor, will break it.

I hope you'll enjoy it !

Not a bad marshal, but a very bad use of his title !!

Thanks for your votes. I'll wait a bit for Hashemite and maybe others, but will update this soon.

Hashemite would have voted for Pétain, so we can move on, after all. This first round isn't really a surprise (though Kal's vote is a big one !!! Wink).

Even though I've hesitated with Juin, I pick

Galliéni

the man who committed massacres in Madagascar and was a racist (even if this type of racism was very widespread in the late 19th century)

Alphonse JUIN

He was loyal to Vichy even after the Allies landed in North Africa.
He was against Algeria's independence.
He was harsh in Morocco after WW2.
He was made a marshal by the weak IVth Republic because the governments wanted to appease the army.
He was really a conservative in the bad meaning of the word and his fine military campaign in Italy (though some other were better...) doesn't compensate for this, far from it.

I must acknowledge I don't know how to vote now:

de Lattre ? (because of dirty war in Indochina and his utter proudness)

Joffre ? (because of stupid operations in 1915-16 and not so good resistance in 1914 or at least 1914 victories due to everybody in France not just Joffre)

Foch ? (because, yes, of very harsh terms on Germany in 1919)

A fight Foch-Joffre would be fine, but the turnout isn't very good.

Let's go for de Lattre this round.

And if Foch is still here next round, he'll be my next target.

And now for the hard part...

Lyautey is probably the one who enacted the most wrong things among the remaining marshals.
But he had so rich a personality and he was so clever that I can't vote for him so early.

Of course, Leclerc and Koenig, for their early rallying of la France Libre and for their role in WW2, are a bit sacred for me.

So, let's turn to the professional, if grey and dull, soldiers.

Maunoury was one of the real winners of Marne 1914 (more than Joffre).

Fayolle clearly made many mistakes during the Somme, 1916.
I vote for him.

I hope the turnout will be better... Tongue

Well, I would have liked Lyautey as nr.3, but a colonial past (even if it's "globally" a good one when he was the only one in charge) is always a huge load.
