Esteemed political scientist and forum member Dwarven Dragon is revolutionizing contemporary political thought with a series of innovative and groundbreaking new rules to determine a given individual's allegiance to the socialist ideology. This thread is a Safe Space for discussing the work of Mr. Dragon. Further analysis in this field is encouraged, in the hope that we might one day have a comprehensive set of rules with which one can accurately identify socialists in all cases.

Also, the rule of "socialism by association" is thus:

Anyone who is improperly associated with Bernie Sanders is a socialist. If you at any point supported him for president, you're a socialist. Anyone he supported at any time before they won their party's nomination, and those related to such people, is also a socialist. Anyone related to him or anyone who supported him for president is also a socialist. People that were not endorsed by Sanders until they reached their respective general election are not socialists. Therefore, Hillary Clinton is not a socialist.

Wulfric, a staunch anti-socialist has a question to ask you -- do you consider Collin Peterson (noted Bernie endorser, but generally considered to be one of the most right-wing remaining Democrats in the House) to be a socialist?

Yes. He endorsed Sanders for president. Only a socialist would endorse a socialist presidential candidate.

The wife of a socialist is a socialist by association.

There is no reason that a non-socialist would support a socialist for their party's nomination.

I should also note that it's not as if that specification I put out is foolproof. It's possible that someone related to Bernie Sanders could reject everything they heard from him. But the chance of them doing so is pretty low; thus there is a high probability that they are a socialist.

Part 1: Socialism by Association

These are candidates who meet any of the following requirements:

A socialist by association consists of ONLY the following:
1. Someone who voted for or endorsed Sanders for President,
2. Someone who is in Sanders's immediate family, and
3. Someone who was endorsed by Sanders during a primary election.

(note also that the status of "socialist by association" can only be expunged in certain limited circumstances, and then only at the discretion of Professor Dragon himself. He has not publicly done so for any 2020 candidate.)

Part 2: Socialists by Admission

These are candidates who have done any of the following:

A socialist by admission consists of ONLY the following:

1. Sponsors or Cosponsors of HR 676,
2. Sponsors or Cosponsors of Senate Bill 1804, and
3. Others who have clearly demonstrated, through the laws that they support, that they are not capitalists.

(I have declined to make any judgement calls regarding the third point; unlike Professor Dragon I have no advanced degree in socialist identification and/or recognition. However, for 1 and 2 I have taken the liberty to reference the current version of those two bills, HR 1384 and S.1129, respectively)

CONCLUSION

Discounting Eric Swalwell, 10 of the 25 candidates are known socialists. Sanders and Gabbard are socialists by both measures, five others are socialists by admission, and three are socialists by association. The remaining 15 candidates are not known to be socialists but any or all could potentially be deemed Socialists By Admission as well in the event that they are "deemed to have clearly demonstrated... that they are not capitalists".
