The only reason King needs to caucus is to ensure he'll get decent committee assignments. He'll obviously go with whichever party offers him a better deal, probably "renegotiating" every two years and forcing the parties to fight over him every new Congress. The GOP has more to offer him, because the Democrats don't want an unpredictable guy like King holding the deciding vote on any important committee.
Honestly, I wouldn't be too surprised if King tries to get Reid and McConnell to cooperate and guarantee him fairly decent assignments without needing to officially caucus. King obviously doesn't want to have anything to do with a party label.
If he gets a decent guarantee without caucusing he'll take it, otherwise he'll go with the better deal the GOP will probably offer him (it's worth noting he's met with Snowe, Collins, and McConnell at this point, but no Democratic Senators).
