Had I been alive then, I probably would have voted for Bryan.  But with the value of hindsight, I would have voted for McKinley.  

Bryan might have been on to something with the idea of Free Silver, though it would have caused severe inflation.  However, the farmers claimed that they would have benefited from inflation as it would help raise the prices on crops and allow them to pay off their debts to various creditors.  It might have been good for rural America as a whole instead of having many farmers suffering from debt.

Bryan was against the annexation of Puerto Rico and the Phillippines, which I commend him for.  At the same time, on matters of foreign affairs he was very isolationist, which I believe was ultimately a losing strategy.  As one of the top industrial powers of the time, it was time for the US to take its place in the increasingly global economy, which McKinley did much to propagate.  So I have mixed feelings about both.
