Actually, in Mexico this would have been considered not just in good taste, but absolutely normal. For the Day of the Dead you'd find skeleton dressed up as the president, a fake death notice for his wife, and a made-up grave of an opposition leader (complete, with a tombstone) all over. This is, indeed, considered innocent fun. But then, kids in a nursery school put up "their own" skeletons, which they spend weeks making led by their teachers.
