If Shays looses and Shea-Porter holds on, chances are there won't be any Republican House members from NE. W/ likely losses in NY factored in, we are going to be staring at something like 4 or 5 Republicans out of 51 House members in NY-NE (only one of them outside upstate NY). This comes close to regional annihilation. Local Republicans may be wise to reevaluate their relationship to the national party: unless they credibly establish a regional autonomy within the party, they might have to struggle for the role of the second party in the near future.
