He merely benefited from himself being the only genuine contestant, whereas the battle between Clinton and Sanders was still underway. Look at Orange County; the Democrats received 50,000 votes more in total, but Trump - TRUMP (!) (lol) - "won the county in the primaries, but eventually lost it as the first Republican in decades.
