I voted Mississippi but really any state in the Deep South (plus Virginia) would suffice.

Virginia is one of the best states, WTF?

Arkansas. I can't think of a single redeeming quality.

1. Virginia is easily one of the worst states, it's on 48 of my ranking list (see best states topic)
2. Bill Clinton was a terrible leader, and was a rapist in office. Nothing to be proud of.

Also, this is so politically motivated. Blue state good, red state muh. Titanium tilt R, easily the worst muh because of cuban americans.

Jesus.

I'd much rather live in Florida than in the poorest and most racist and deeply religious state of Mississippi. Even life in Cuba is much better, even for a right-winger than in Mississippi.

Virginia was and still is the heartland of the Southern elite, perhaps the most contemptible class in American history. In the past it was slave-owning planters, today it is wealthy suburbanites in NOVA. I much prefer the working class descendants of Unionists from West Virginia to those Confederates (Lee's army was literally called the Army of Northern Virginia), even if their voting patterns in the current partisan alignment might be further from my own.

Most people in NoVa have very little, if anything, to do with the South culturally. Most are probably of Unionist stock if you care to go that far back.

It's the same for many states with a large metropolitian area. Upstate NY is not similar to NY or Long Island. Atlanta is vastly different than Georgia rural areas. Chicago is very different than the rest of Illinois.

Part of the reason why I rated Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont so high, is that they're so progressive and are not even dominated by one enormous large metropolitian area that changes the entire state. They're one of the least religious states in the USA. And you don't have to live in a city or suburban area to feel accepted. There's much more unity. And there are also non-political reasons why I like those.

And yes, West Virginia > Virginia. Someone like Richard Ojeda would never rise / stand up in Virginia.

Naming the highest % black state your least favorite in the country is a pretty bad lookkk, guys.
LOL.

This is EXACTLY what is wrong with political correctness.

When was the last time that Wisconsin has contributed anything to society?
LOL, You like Iowa, and Iowa is the most similar state to Wisconsin.

When was the last time that Iowa has contributed anything to society perhaps? We could say that of any state.

Meh. I don't really have a least favourite state. I'll pick New Jersey because it feels like a suburban dump. Never been there though.

Jersey has some surprisingly enjoyable spots. You'll never hear about them because the Northeast hates them and the rest of the country just takes their word for it. The South Jersey shore, Palisades, and Jersey City/Hoboken all come to mind. Plus it's excessively Italian, which I'd think you'd appreciate.
Politicians in NJ are pretty crap, except for maybe Cory Booker, and even him doesn't look very authentic at times.

In terms of culture / nature, there is almost no nature there, so no points for that, and in terms of culture, it reminds me of the TV show 'Jersey Shore', so yeah lol.

We're not the best, but at least we're the breadbasket of America. Wisconsin is just goofy
I like Iowa, but I don't understand why someone likes Iowa and dislikes / hates Wisconsin. Or is there some kind of Wisconsin / Iowa rivalry i don't know about?

It's the white people there who are the problem.

Mississippi is far from the worst state when it comes to race relations.
It's consistently the state that is the worst on a huge number of issues, and I mean race relations weren't good in Mississippi. Sure, they're probably better now. But they just ignore each other, pretend they don't exist. I mean, it's a slavery state, it's a state where busses were racially divided, it's a state where a lot of whites had black householders. Universities were whites-only until the 1960's. There was racial segregation. I mean it has an absolute atrocious and terrible history and it's consistently one of the worst states to leave in in terms of basic necessities.

If Mississippi was independent, it would be a third world country. There are numerous African countries that just do the job better than Mississippi, esp. if you consider that Mississippi can benefit from the wealth and 'welfare' of the USA, while those African countries can't.

Oklahoma. Florida at least has some nice beaches and interesting natural locations, Mississippi has some good contributions to music (as does Arkansas, but to a lesser extent), and while North Dakota is possibly the least interesting state, I'm not sure it's really that bad beyond being boring. West Virginia also has a lot of natural beauty. What is Oklahoma's appeal, though?
As a former storm chaser, Oklahoma (and Kansas & Texas) are the places to be. Lots of fields and plains for storm spotting. When I was 15 or so, it was my dream to live there for that reason.

It seems that Oklahoma has had that title in the past, but Louisiana is currently out on top. Incidentally, the Louisiana State Penitentiary, a.k.a. Angola, is known for having particularly cruel conditions; at least in the not too distant past, it was basically a mock plantation, with prisoners working in the sweltering heat in the prison fields all day.

I really, really, really wish Germany had such penitentiaries in combination with hard compulsory labor, too. I know that it's difficult to enforce that claim owing to our past, but it is a matter of common knowledge that our prisons, especially our juvenile detention homes, are supposed to be first class hotels. That's one of the things America does better than Europe.

It absolutely is not one of the things America does better than Europe. Our prisons are a human rights horror story.

Yes, i agree.

The difference between America and Europe in terms of prisons are absolutely large, and i'm somewhat in the middle, perhaps leaning a bit more to the European side. Because the America state of prison is trash.

But what Europe is terrible in is court decisions and the law. That's what we're terrible in. Covid measure offenders are worser criminals than literal rapists and that's what absolutely annoys me a lot.

A juvenile offendor that uses his cellphone on a bike will get a huge fine that his parents will have to pay or that he/she can not pay, but if you murder someone as a juvenile, chances are high you will get free again, and not even have to pay a fine.

it's absolutely ridicilous, and one of the things that angers me most. And i think America is better in that regard, but once convinced America is worse.

I've seen documentaries about Latin American prisons. In some occasions, i like the concept but in practice it's probably still trash. But i'd love a prison with minimal security, but most importantly one where the offendors / criminals actually sort of are independent in terms of food, things like that, that they have their own micro-economy. That way, there is no prisoner vs jailer effect, and that way prisons will cost less (although some do have a need for a different system that has more healthcare, nursing, mental healthcare or in case of juvenile offendors persons who try to set them on the right track), though hierarchy among criminals is potentially an issue too, and perhaps it's not exactly a good system though, but still preferrable over abusing and corrupt jailors (which is often the case in other Latin/North-American prisons)

I also sort of like the prison system in Norway. It has some good ideas, but it's a perhaps a bit too liberal for heavy offendors. For small offendors, sure.

I'll do some research about it soon and look for a good system, but I doubt any country has a good system right now.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarceration_in_Norway

Giving on their wikipedia, it's however a success story, and it's remarkable Norway had a punitive justice system too, so perhaps after all it doesn't work, but... we still need some changes I believe.
