The midwest used to be a GOP stronghold. And after 8 years of Wilson, domestic unrest, race riots, bad economy, League of Nations debacle, Harding was able to win in a historic landslide in 1920. The economy recovered, and Coolidge benefited in 1924 during a time of peace and prosperity. Moreover, the 1924 Democratic Convention was a total mess; it lasted 103 ballots before John Davis emerged as the consensus candidate. The DNC back then required two-thirds to win the nomination.
