Civil Unions are inferior for a multitude of reasons, including the fact that many countries won't recognize them, and they often times aren't respected by institutions in the same way as a marriage would be, even if on paper they're suppose to have all the same rights, which isn't even a given in itself.

That being said, civil unions would enable same-sex and non-heteronormative couples, partners, and individuals to become more normalized in the society and it's a pretty obvious argument to make in 10-15 years that we may as well abolish the semantics difference once these partnerships are more broadly accepted and visible.

Just my two cents, cheers to all local Hong Kong activists and solidarity in this and their many other struggles.
