Well that's when he was crownded Emperor but he was King of the Franks prior to that and got control of a good portion of Europe.

But if you put him in the 800s, a good candidate for the 700s is Charles Martel.

Okay.

And I might have been thinking of Martel but didn't know the exact name, was he the guy that won the Battle of Tours against the Muslims? He'd be a good choice then.
