This is so dumb for two reasons-

1. He's not even doing the "OK" sign. No one does it against his chest and the fingers were off to the side, not straight up.

2. Even if he was doing the OK sign, 99% of people in real life have no idea that a few trolls on 4Chan decided to tell people it was a "hate sign" to troll.

You can't tell me the left's concern over racism doesn't constitute a "moral panic" at this point. This is like the Satanic Panic with parents flipping out over anything that even remotely resembled obscure Satanic imagery.

You also have to roll your eyes at the "gaslighting" references. Punching your wife in the face and then telling her you didn't do it the next morning is gaslighting. Disagreeing with you on a subjective matter of interpretation is not. And just to troll a little bit, I thought objectivity was a white male construct and didn't really exist? If there's no objective world then you can't actually gaslight anyone, can you?

Really stunned the NYT would actually run this, especially the stuff pointing out that the left has their own problem with tribalism and misinformation. Although given the predictable Twitter tantrums in response I wouldn't expect too much like it in the future given that their main goal now is to kiss their leftists subscriber bases ass and tell them whatever they want to hear instead of being an actual newspaper.
