This is the problem when you emphasize equality rather than freedom. Telling everyone exactly what to do is an equally valid solution to inequality as letting everyone do what they want. The emphasis should have been that it's wrong to force someone to wear a particular article of clothing because of what their gender is. Then the solution would have been clear.
