Is anyone really surprised by this?

If Republicans dug their feet in on defunding Planned Parenthood, the government would most certainly be shutting down.

Let's see what actually happens (we also could defund it in the Obamacare repeal), but we need to defund MURDERERS immediately.

Anything "defunding" Planned Parenthood is DOA in the Senate unless Republicans opt to "defund" it through reconciliation. And even that might be tough for them considering likely defections from Republicans like Collins, Murkowski, and maybe even Heller if a sufficient amount of pressure is put on him.

Also, when it comes to the issue of Planned Parenthood, I really hate the "defunding" terminology that Republicans have successfully implanted in everyones heads. The government doesn't cut a blank check to Planned Parenthood, the law already prevents taxpayer dollars from being used to pay for abortions.

But, why did we compromise with the Democrats at all?  We have majorities in both chambers- there is no reason to give murderers money to murder more people!  I'm disgusted!  Maybe we can get a coalition of the far-right (acting for the right reasons) and the far-left (acting for the wrong reasons) to stop this thing, but I am devastated right now.

Shutting down the government over Planned Parenthood is a surefire way for Republicans to lose their coveted majority in the House come 2018.

Also Republicans don't have a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, that's why they have to compromise.

Paul Ryan should have straight up told the democrats this :

You want planned parenthood funded well then fine agree to 70 billion dollars in cuts to other domestic spending or we want you to not filibuster tax reform or welfare reform. Also give that deal on live television .

Planned Parenthood is a nonstarter, that's why. They simply don't have any leverage when it comes to this issue.

then the dems will agree to 70 billion dollars in cuts to other domestic spending.

Why on earth would Democrats agree to that?

I realize that as somebody who's strongly left-wing on almost everything except abortion I'm not the right person to be pointing this out, but does it occur to anybody else as cause for concern that a private organization, any one private organization, is as much of a political shibboleth/sacred cow as Planned Parenthood is? Even accepting that they play as irreplaceable a role in American health care as they represent themselves as playing, surely it doesn't say anything good about our society that that's the case.

It's a depraved political ploy perpetrated by Republicans in order to rile up their pro-life base.
