Measure to expand background check (Manchin-Toomey amendment) voted down, 54-46

Scum.  What a slap in the face to my town and everyone else who's been affected by gun violence.

Wait, what? Did it pass or fail 54-46? Because this arrangement depicts something that passed 54-46.

It needed sixty to overcome a filibuster.

Didn't they already have a cloture vote?

I guess not.  According to CNN, this was the cloture vote.

Giffords, Obama, Newtown parents, and others are speaking in front of the White House now.

WHAT?? That thing was so watered down it should've passed. I mean, I was almost ashamed of how watered down it was, but I mean, Pat friggin Toomey proposed this, he had to bring some of conservatives on his side.

This is one of the few Gun Control measures I support, and this is frustrating.

I feel the exact same way, but as you can see from the roll call, Democrats are responsible for its demise, as well.

Also, for the record errybody, in effect this was a 55-45 vote; Reid only voted against it because the majority party leader always votes against his party on a failed cloture vote so that he will have the possibility of introducing a motion to reconsider it at a later date (since Senate rules say only someone who was on the "winning" side of a vote can call for a motion to reconsider).

Parliamentary procedure Cluster[Inks]: the Senate at its finest!

Totally absurd.

Overall I very much support gun rights more as part of my puritanical support for absolute right to private property (means of violence should be allowed for someone to protect their private property.)  On pure merits of this amendment as is I am mostly neutral about but I lean against it most based on the fact that I think it can be a part of a slippery slope toward a gun ban.  Of course ever after Obama raised taxes on 450K+ my view of the Obama regime now pretty much channels Mao Tse-Dong Thought "We should support whatever the enemy opposes and oppose whatever the enemy supports" (Mao 1939)  From that point of view I applaud this amendment's defeat.

I guess that does it for the liberal love affair with Rand Paul.

Not that I think many people here oppose background checks, but, for what it's worth: stats show background checks are effective, contrary to NRA claims.

Reletively speaking, there's ONE party that is OVERWHELMINGLY responsible for this catastrpohe, I'm ashamed to say.

True, but it's pretty embarrassing when Democrats can't unite on an issue that >90% of Americans agree with them on.

Good point. Obama's blame in this measure's defeat is clearly second only to Congressional Democrats. Roll Eyes

Huh?  I never blamed Obama for this measure's defeat, if that's what you're getting at.  I'm not blaming congressional Democrats in general, either.  I'm blaming certain Democrats for not helping pass this measure in spite of the fact that an overwhelming majority of the population agrees with them on it.  It still wouldn't have been enough to overcome the filibuster, but the fact that there was bipartisan opposition to the bill doesn't help the cause.  It was the same argument the Republicans used against the health care bill.
