No surprises that Victoria has the highest yes vote of any state.

The vote in Queensland was a massive shock to me.

Dean Smith's version of the bill to legalise SSM as been introduced into the parliament

(Dean Smith's version is the liberal version of the bill, not the conservative Ferguson bill)

Another question, doesn't Melbourne and Sydney have the same proportions of immigrant communities, but Melbourne even in immigrant areas had a higher yes% vote than in Sydney.

Isn't Melbourne generally less "ghettoised" than Sydney?

As in, it is more mixed throughout, as opposed to having places like Cabramatta or Bankstown that have huge concentrations of Vietnamese or Lebanese
Yes, this is mostly why. Bruce went No because of the high concentration of foreign born residents in and around Glen Waverley, it is also the electorate with the highest proportion of foreign born citizens in the country (50.8%).

Calwell went no because of it's unusually high concentration of adherents of Catholicism and Islam (38.5% and 16.8% respectively).

Why did parts of Sydney vote so strongly against it?

Immigrant communities are homophobic because of the culture of their homeland. (Don't forget gay acceptance wasn't even the norm in most Western countries until a decade ago)

Also, don't forget the areas around Blaxland are considered Australia's bible belt.

-snip-

I know its uncomfortable but the reason why Western Sydney was against marriage equality was because of the large immigrant population who came to Australia but maintain the social customs of their home country of which unfortunately homophobia was a thing.

I never discounted this in my original post.
