Option 3 for me.

There's already a huge incentive not to drive without knowing how. Your insurance payments are going to skyrocket, or you'll get yourself killed.

IMHO, this is just another way for states to tax us.

How many people do you honestly know who would drive (or let their kid drive) if they didn't know how?

But the consequences are so great that people will think twice.

I think I would technically keep driver's licenses, but you'd just have to fill out a form to get one. If you're caught driving drunk, then it should be revoked in court.

I don't think anyone argued that no younger drivers would be safe.  Hell, I think a majority of them would be.  But all it takes is 5% of those 12-14 year old drivers to really do some harm.

Parents won't let them drive.

That's an extreme minority, and they'll die off pretty quickly

Are there really any less accidents now than there were before we had driver's licenses? I doubt it.

No. I can't even get it until December. But I think it's stupid that you need certification from a 'professional' Behind the Wheel teacher.

No. I'd rather it not exist.

One of the things we need to do is build a culture of personal responsiblity. I bet accidents would go down under my system.

Incorrect.

Except that I'm not 15, and don't have it all figured out.

That is one of the dumbest things I've read in my life.

Actually I don't give a damn. I have no place to drive to. This is a philosophical argument.

Alright, it's fine to insult me, but at least read my posts first. I said that under THIS IDEA adults wouldn't let them drive. And that's why it isn't insane. OBVIOUSLY no kid should be able to drive without his/her parent's permission.

My idea is supposed to reduce the number of people splattered across the interstate. And I've never seen that.

I never said 14 year olds should be allowed to drive. I'd leave the age limit alone, but I'd make it easier on people who are old enough.

As things are, parents are more inclined to let their kids get away with the bare minimum. If it was completely up to them, they'd be more cautious.

Okay, yes. I'm being 'oppressed' by people who happen to be adults and want the drinking age to be 21.

If someone's 16 and his/her parents are okay with this person drinking, then government should stay out of it. That's a right of free people.

I don't really want to drink. It has nothing to do with me (and I could already just drink anyway).

Name, address, SSN, etc.

They'd also have to show proof of citizenship and age, of course.

That test isn't the big deal. You have to go through hours and hours of Behind the Wheel.

I shouldn't have to go through some professional Behind the Wheel crap just to drive. If I wait until I'm 18, can I bypass all that?

Amos, I'm talking about skipping Behind The Wheel. The written test I'm fine with. Is there any way to do that?

I have absolutely nowhere to drive to, so yes, I would gladly wait until 18.

Regardless of whether they're needed or not, is there any way to skip it in any state?

It is still a useless requirement that should be done away with, but at least I can bypass it by waiting until I'm 18.
