Hi, guys, I made it home to Tulsa.  We had a family dinner after the service, so I didn't start home until 1345.  I got home about 1530.  It was a good and fitting service.

I'm hearing what you guys are saying.  It is odd for a new employee to get a week off for a non-immediate family member.  My aunt told me to thank my boss for letting me off for the funeral and to grieve properly.  It meant a lot to her for me to come down and help carry the casket.  Even though he gave me the week off, I did help my cause by going into work anyway for all of Monday, half of Tuesday and I will keep my promise to him to return the day after the funeral, which would be Thursday.  I had planned to take Friday off, but since I was off today, I will work the second half of the day on Friday.  I should get back to work by 1230 and will work until 1600.  It's only 3 1/2 hours, but that's more on my paycheck.  I will get back to a 40 hour week next week.  If he does let me go at the end of October, then my aunt's brother told me I could apply at his place where they have gobs of positions including CAD work.  I'm not too worried.  Plus, I will go out feeling good about myself.  It's not guaranteed that I will be let go, though, so I'm not going to even act like it. I'm not going to act defeated, because that will only doom me.  Instead, I'm going to get back to focusing one day at a time and doing the best job that I can.  If that's not enough, then so be it.

No, but it's also not guaranteed that you won't be let go, and recent events have left a lot of flashing arrows pointing in that general direction. I'm not suggesting keeping all of your stuff in a cardboard box next to your desk. I'm just suggesting you put some feelers out there so that if something does happen in a month, you have an exit strategy in place.

Things aren't going so well at my job right now. They're having cash flow problems and a recent major case was not decided in our clients' favor. Because I am the assistant to the managing partner, I am less expendable than some, but I'm still reviewing my resume. I have been wanting to leave for a while and the current situation has removed some of the inertia. My goal is to be out of that place on my own terms by the end of the year.

I've got my resume ready to give to this company that my aunt's brother works for in case I do get let go.

Then give it to them. It would look a lot better for you to quit this job and start a different one than it would for you to be laid off from this job and start a different one. The former allows you to spin it in your favor however you want - that you left because it "wasn't a good environment" for you, that you didn't "feel challenged enough."

You got a point there.  I'll talk it over with my parents tomorrow evening and get their advice.  Ultimately, it's my decision, but I want to get their advice.

They'll you not to worry about it, trust God, don't do anything.

I have no idea what they'll say, to be honest, but I don't think they would say that.  They might tell me to stay up here and show some loyalty to my employer and try to put in some tenure with them, but keep the new company on standby.  They also might tell me it would be a good idea to go ahead and apply with this other company.

I tell you what, I am ready to get back to normal.  All these doctor's appointments and funerals and unwanted time off is getting to me.  I'm ready to get back in there tomorrow and put my nose to the grindstone and start trying to return to some sense of normalcy.

Nagas,

I seriously doubt it.  If I get let go, I'm sure it will be a respectful and cordial affair.  I am doing really well in my actual work and he has told me before that my help is appreciated and needed.  The poor review appears to be a thing of the past and I'm starting to look forward to my next review in early October.  I'm not getting cocky, naturally, but i'm not exactly worried.  He is a very understanding guy.  He wants the work to be done and done well, but he is also a human being who is sensitive to the needs of his employees.  I have no reason to be concerned at this point.

Bushie quitting this job at this point because he thinks he might get fired seems like an echo of him breaking up with Allison over a joke because he was afraid that she was going to dump him.

If he's happy there, it seems kind of silly to jump ship at this point.  Who knows whether the next job will be any better.  How many jobs that only lasted a few weeks do you want him to have on his resume?

That's kind of what I'm thinking.  I need to give this job a chance and give myself a chance in this job.  I'm ready to settle down and make my push through the holidays.

The only problem with this new company is it is in Oklahoma City, so I would have to move yet again while keeping my apartment in Tulsa since the lease doesn't run out until May 31.

Inks, I totally agree with you (shocker!). I am not going to leave this job.  He gave me a week off, so I need to show him some loyalty.  I promised him that I wouldn't miss anytime for the duration of my 90 day probation.  There are warning signs, but they aren't loud and deafening, more like whispers right now.  Anyway, I need to get back to work.  I've still got 20 minutes left today.  Talk to you later this evening.

Harry, you don't have to worry.  I'm in this for the long haul.  I'm just ready to get back to normal.  I told my boss today that I won't miss anymore through the rest of my 90 days.  This means I will do my very best to put up a perfect October.

That could be worse, but as I'm assessing the situation right now, I've no reason to be overly worried.  Concerned? Yes, worried? No.

It will be a lot easier to assess things when I get back to full normal on Monday.

Do you feel like you're kinda out of the loop yourself on this one?

Not really.  My boss and I have developed a good rapport with each other.  We communicate quite well.  Of course, he could still be planning to send me packing and I don't know it, but he hasn't given any hints of that, yet.  I still have roughly 5 weeks left in my 90 days, so I should be getting a clearer idea as October progresses.

Plus, as others have said, if he had made up his mind to get rid of me, why would he welcome me back to work and try to work with me.  He doesn't owe me anything, and it seems like a counter-productive move to keep me around if he had made up his mind to can me.

I'm out of the doctor's appointment.  Everything turned out normal.  My blood pressure and sodium are a touch high, but not enough to sound the alarm.  I'm waiting on new medicine to help with the elevated Tourette's I've had due to this death in the family, but it was a very good appointment.  I'll get a bite to eat and then head to work.  I'm still on track for a 1230-1300 arrival.

I made it back home.  I called my boss at 1115 when I was about to leave Shawnee, the town where my doctor's office is located, and told him I would be in around 1300.  He said to go on home as there is no need to just work 3 hours.  So, I won't get my paycheck until Monday.  I'll be honest, though, he did not sound happy.  My attendance is still pretty good other than missing 2 1/2 days in the past week, not including today, but I think my performance, while it has improved, may not be improving at the speed he wants or needs.  He said we'll talk about it Monday.  I still have a job for right now, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if that changes Monday.  So, I'm about to turn around and go back to my parents' for the weekend to discuss next steps in the event that I am out of a job come Monday.  Again, I do not think it's my attendance, rather I think it has a lot to do with my performance not improving fast enough.  So, have fun with this one, folks...

Yep, this one is all but over.  My boss just sent me a text saying not to come in Monday, but to come in Tuesday at 8:30 to "talk".  Applications start going in tonight and tomorrow.

I really don't know, to be honest.  I just heard about this company this past Wednesday at the funeral.  All I know is I'm going to update my resume and send in the application as soon as possible.  He said they have many positions available and a lot more positions open than what's on their website.  I looked on the website and found a Mechanical Draftsman job that I might qualify for, so I'm definitely going to at least try.  Dad told me "whatever you do, do not go back to customer service."

It was July 15, 2007 at the old Shea Stadium.  The game was against the Cincinnati Reds.  I was working at a computer camp at Rosemont College near Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

Bushie, would you say you have a photographic memory?  Or, at least, do you have a very good memory for dates?

I am excellent with dates.  I can remember exact dates from my childhood and even before I was born.  I can even name what day of the week the event happened.  I have a virtual calendar in my head so without looking at a real calendar, I know what day a particular date fell on or will fall on.

bushie, it is unfortunate but cadd might not be for you.

It's better than customer service.  I'm not going to give up on CAD.  I know I can do it, and I was starting to get it, I just need a more patient boss.

Anyway, I have PM'd some of the Update readers the name of my family member's company for their investigation.  I look forward to reading their findings.

Interesting.  Do you remember what date the 1996 election fell on?  How about what time the election was called for Clinton?  Do you remember what you had for dinner or what your dad was wearing at the time?

Tuesday, November 5, 1996.  (I did that by recalling what day November 1 fell on in every year between 1996 and 2014, which was Friday in 1996, then added five days.)

I could not answer the last two questions by memory.

The biggest thing I will take away from this job is I now have two months experience.  I am no longer a completely new beginner.  Those two months could prove very valuable in my job search.
