As a few have pointed out - aside from the political toxicity of it, there's actually logical consistency in the position Trump (briefly) took. If abortion is immoral, and murder, and should be illegal, then punishment is not only appropriate, it's necessary.
Really, the more cowardly position is to hand-wave it away with "she's vulnerable and needs help." Plenty of murderers are vulnerable. Plenty need help. Perhaps it's odd to hear, but most murderers aren't Jeffrey Dahmer. There is often context and circumstance. The law punishes them anyway - as it should.
The suggestion that pregnant women seeking abortions are vulnerable and needing help and yet according to your belief should still be saddled with the pregnancy in most cases, also grates. Ways to make women less vulnerable and distressed tend not to include forcing them to continue with an unwanted pregnancy, and potentially an unwanted child.
