I'm starting to think we badly need more (non-bigoted, principled, articulate) socon Democrats to counteract the excesses of shallow "live-and-let-live-ism".

I agree 100%! We SoCon Democrats are certainly a minority in our party, but we can move the party in a better direction if we allow ourselves to be active and contributing members to the Democratic Party.

So all y'all Social Conservatives, New Democrats, Dixiecrats, Conservadems, Centrists, nitwits, halfwits and dimwits come and make yourself known in this thread!

I ended up concluding it's easier pushing the GOP to move to the center on economic issues than to pushing the Democrats to move to the center on social issues.

The funny thing is that I'd say the same thing, but swapping "economic issues" with "social issues." Then again, as my avatar displays, I reject the "lesser of two evils" paradigm and prefer to support a movement that agrees with me across the board.

Speaking of which, you guys should make some kind of "Communitarian Party." I'd obviously never support it, but the more we can rob the duopoly of their absolute power the better!

Not a bad idea. But I feel that the term Populist would be a better indicator of our beliefs. Either that or "Paleoliberal". To emphasize our traditionalist view point.

I think Comunitarian would be the best term actually.

"Paleoliberal" sounds awful. Tongue

Paleoliberal is meant to imply separation from Neoliberalism. But you're right, it doesn't quite roll off the tongue so well.

This thread is so 2007-Atlas feeling. All it needs is someone raving about how strongly they favor civil unions but regardless believe marriage is only between one man and one woman.

Why not?

Really 'socially conservative' is a very unwieldy and silly term. I mean the 'socially' descriptor is better than its evil cousin, my bête noir, but it's still a flabby term. Does it mean 'of the religious right'? Does it mean somebody who expouses law and order policies? The role of libertarianism (who may be social conservatives - there is no contradiction between JCL and his avatar, for instance - further murkies the waters.

My definition (I must emphasize that this is simply my personal opinion), is that it means an emphasis on traditional values and society.

For the record (not that my opinion is really relevant here, but since I provided the inspiration for this thread I might as well weigh in), what I had in mind with "socon" (which probably wasn't the best word for it, but anyhow) was people who don't subscribe to the "live and let live" paradigm that defines modern liberalism and believe that the State has a legitimate role in promoting moral behavior.

I certainly don't think it should mean hating gays (sorry Hifly!), being a MRA, or having Drumpf's views on Islam.

Of course! I'm totally in support of gay marriage, think the MRAs and Trump are terrible. I just think that the government should be promoting a sense of community is all.
