It's good for the protesters and the world to have free speech and a right to peaceful protest.

Australia removed capital punishment because of peaceful mass protest.

These protests do have an effect, no question.

As for Trump's popularity going up, I think the republican voters feel a sense of embolden (~ment) when they see thousands protesting Trump.

I think a lot of people are protesting the election of Donald Trump, which in turn is insulting to the people who voted for him.

More often than not, Democrat's go after Trump voters with personal attacks. It seems to be a fairly common strategy. And for this reason, when you make it personal, most people will immediately side with the person being attacked.

I wouldn't expect it over a long period of time, but it's an interesting effect.
