Its a very tough issues with a lot of emotional outcomes for families.

Australia has been very successful in managing Syrian refugees.

Since a change of government 3 years (?) ago;

(1) Number of Syrian refugees arrived by boat = zero.

(2) Number of economic Afghan, Sri Lankan, Iraqi, Iranian and similar muslim national refugees arrived by boat = zero.

(3) Number of new children in detention = zero.

(4) Number of actual asylum seeking refugees from Syrian warzone flown here by the government taken=12,000

We have offshore detention and we are working on resettling some refugees in muslim countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.

So what has happened is the Australian opposition party who had a more "Angela Merkel" approach during their tenure attracted boat people resulting in 2,200 drownings at sea for potential asylum seekers.

So all of the children in detention were put there by the former government, who are now in opposition.

So stopping the economic refugee flow has resulted in:

No deaths at sea; and
We can now fly to Syria and choose genuine refugees;
No money for Indonesian human traffickers.

In an amazing political backflip, the opposition party has no argument, because all of the sad issues which dominate this thread were caused by having their relaxed immigration policy.

Now things are managed more strictly, we have no drownings at sea and no new children in detention.

Great news. I detest both.

The message we have sent out is that Australia will not setltle you if you arrive illegally by boat. If you are seeking asylum, apply through the normal channels like everyone else. Get in the queue.

And ever since that message was broadcast, the number of economic refugees has been zero.

Once you take the carrot away, the economic refugees will not come.

Australia has been successful stopping the boats, but very poor at integrating the African and Middle Eastern refugees who now live here.

Unemployment rates and social security dependence on our latest refugee arrivals is astronomical compared to your average.

So there is vigourous debate about immigration policy.

I think what has happened in Syria is appalling. Very surprised that the muslim population are not resettled in muslim countries nearby.

Hard to ignore these data:

http://www.news.com.au/finance/economy/world-economy/cologne-is-every-day-europes-rape-epidemic/news-story/e2e618e17ad4400b5ed65045e65e141d

Economic migrants are not just coming for the money. These migrants are viewing women not dressed according to islamic standards as prostitutes who can be legally raped.

Tough to read, and hard to imagine what the Germans and Swedes will do about it.

Either way, right wing groups are surging in a political sense.

Some Australian news crew went to Sweden to see how the 200,000 refugees from poor muslim countries was getting on:

That does not paint a pretty picture.

Whose fault is this shipwreck? Is inviting people to come to Europe/Germany leading to more or less people climbing into unsafe boats?

The people who incentivised the situation.

Would it be sensible if countries such as Saudi-Arabia, Poland and the US took their fair share, yes.

This is the thing that is bemusing.

Countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Yemen, Egypt are simply not coming to the party.

Sweden and Belgium are ideologically so different for these people, even the weather. The only thing they are after is economic advantage.

The other issue with rich countries like Sweden and Germany is will they send Syrians back after the war settles down? That is, the leader is deposed.
