Senators and the Vice President,

I rise in opposition of this legislation, the Atlasian Symbols Bill.

There are several problems with this bill and I frankly could not support it in its current form.  First of all, the bill provides for the creation of a National Bird symbol, a National Fish symbol, and a National Animal symbol.  Is it permissable to nominate another type of fish or bird in the "National Animal" category?  Why not call it the category National Mammal instead?  I must also comment on the extreme pointlessness of having a national fish-- a national fish-- it makes about as much sense as having a national arachnid or national frog.

Beyond that, there is a serious problem with Section 3 of this bill, which states that a Senator shall submit ten options for each symbol to the Department of Forum Affairs.  Ten options times ten Senators times six new categories is six hundred options that the Department will have to administer a vote on.  Can we expect the public to put up with such a daunting task of going through one-hundred options for six separate categories?  Can we not have some sort of remorse for the Department of Forum Affairs, whose job in this would be potentially hellish if there were some sort of tie or no clear majority in a preferential voting contest where there are one-hundred options for just one category?

This bill, while simple and well-meaning at first glance, is in fact a great burden on the Department of Forum Affairs and the Atlasian public.  I urge the Senate to defeat it.

Being like what?  I seriously don't want the Department of Forum Affairs to have to administer an election where the ballot has 600 choices on it.

Either way, I support the amendment.

Yes, the amendment is without doubt an improvement.

I, too, have sent my choices to the Secretary of Forum Affairs and the Deputy Secretary of Forum Affairs.
