A Machiavellian, scheming, self-centred person and because of these qualities, a perfect person for the White House

Of course those are only negative qualities when we're talking about female politicians.

Um, no? When are those qualities used positively to describe male politicians?

By using different, more uplifting words to describe them, as Beet has just demonstrated above.  It is like using 'shrill' to describe Hillary, but using adjectives like 'outspoken' and 'passionate' when that same quality is demonstrated by a male politician.
