In terms of why the country is trending more Democratic, barely anybody has mentioned the obvious reason: 
- Minorities make up a much, much larger percentage of the voting electorate than they used to.  Also, they are increasingly fleeing the Republican party.  Facing both of these realities, Republicans now need a dramatically higher percentage of the white vote than they used to rely on even just ten or twenty years ago.

Also, younger generations are replacing older ones.  Younger generations are more liberal than older generations on almost all social issues.  On economic issues, the differences are less extreme but IMO millennials in particular are rather left-wing, having been significantly affect by/coming of age around 2008.
