1968 :

Richard M. Nixon: New York
Lost to but defeated Hubert H. Humphrey
Nixon was born and raised in California, and represented that state in the House, Senate, and as VP. He moved to NY in 1964. He won California, which was really his "home state" in 1960, 1968 and 1972.
