Not referring to any specific action, but it is worth mentioning that just because Republicans did [whatever] over the past 8 years on the road back to power doesn't mean it is automatically a smart or even viable idea. They made their own mistakes, and in the process of doing so helped make the political environment toxic as well.

Given how obsessed with power at any costs the Republican Party has become, I can't say I'm eager for my party to replicate their behavior in full.

His approvals in 2006 were 38 at the time of the election, and in the low 40's in the months leading up to it (roughly mirroring where Trump is now). Please check your facts. Didn't hit the 20's til the recession.

This is kinda off-topic, but I wonder what would happen if the approvals were 38% but the disapprovals were somehow only at around 36 - 38% themselves, which everyone else being "unsure/no opinion."

Also, agree with your message idea. That seems like a good candidate.

You don't have to run an overtly negative campaign, the media is anyways after Trump's million gaffes & Trump himself is a disaster & is screwing up. You will have Super-pacs running negative & even Republicans fighting among each other. There is already a huge negative image & campaign building that.

Democrats surely need to make their positions known no matter what, but focusing more on that is more of a presidential strategy than a midterm one:

imo, they are absolutely right. Midterms are referendums on the president, and Democrats can push policies, but what will truly move voters en masse is their opinions of the incumbent president and his or her party. Aside from this, there are other studies showing the affect of the voters opinion of the president on state-level races as well.
