To the Southern Regional Committee.

Who am I? Why am I here? As far as you know, I'm just some kid who decided to actually play the game by running for Senate instead of just being a registered voter. But here I am, running for Senate. I feel that I am the right person for the job.

I'm going to be blunt. I don't have any experience, but I will provide a liberal voice to the South. You're just going to have to trust me on this.

I'm confident that I'll be a fine candidate for the job.

Peebs: Great opening line! Could you please go into more depth about your political beliefs? Where do you draw the line between regional issues and federal issues? Who would you describe as your political role model? Finally, how do you plan to be an active legislator? Thank you! Smiley
I knew it wouldn't be enough. Since time before the consideration begins is running out, I don't have much time (or effort) to write a whole speech. I'll give you a brief overview of my policies in President Infinity form. To me, issues that pertain exclusively to a region are regional issues, whereas those that pertain all three regions will be federal issues. Regions can also work together on multi-region issues.
As a legislator, I intend to vote with my gut on the issues of the region and the nation.

I'll wait for Leinad to do his declaring as chair of this committee, but I will say that after this I think we can unanimously appoint Peebs (As I think we all agree, I may be wrong though).
I concur, as long as she is willing to join!
Well, I am willing to join, so it's all good!

I don't think I worded some of this right, and I couldn't find anything for the lengths of legislative terms, but whatever.

My suggestion is that we hold Class I elections alongside Presidential elections, and Class II elections on the 3rd weekend of Aug/Dec/Apr. As for gubernatorial elections, my top two preferences are alongside Class II elections and Sep/Jan/May (same as Legislature of the old South), but that's just me. Legislative elections will be alongside gubernatorial elections if in a 4-month term, and alongside Presidential elections as well if in a 2-month term. As for referendums, I think the second weekend after it is decided that it will be voted on sounds right.

Principle Vote

Question: how should we hold elections for the Southern Senate seats?

[1] Simultaneous with Federal elections

[2] A week before Federal elections

[3] A week after Federal elections

[4] Other

EDIT: Adding preferences.

So will the June 2016 race for Senate be held alongside the federal election? It's a bit late for the election to take place as we voted.

Well, hopefully the federal election starts on the 24th, so then ours could start next weekend. I'm still not quite sure what is happening federally, but I feel that we're prepared to open up the voting booth next weekend. Perhaps we pass a resolution stating that this first election will be next weekend regardless of what happens federally?
I just assumed the federal election would begin next Friday. I will also support a resolution to solidify the June 2016 race for Senate to begin on the 17th.

Well, I'd say an appointment seems appropriate if the seat is vacated 28 days before the end of the term. A special election within two weeks of the vacancy if the seat becomes vacant earlier also seems reasonable.

I'm not opposed to letting the Governor make an appointment with approval from the legislature - I'm a proponent of filling a seat and ensuring our proper representation as quickly as possible. If we were to go the special election route, I think it should only be in the first two months and the election should occur as quickly as possible - two weeks is too long in my opinion to wait.
The legislature could act to make it as soon as possible. But when I said within two weeks, I meant to imply that two weeks was the longest to wait. I would also prefer it to be as soon as possible.

Out of interest would you mandate that Governors must appoint from the same party if possible?
Sure.

60 seems like a long time, but 28 seems too short. For that purpose, I propose a moderate hero plan, so to speak: If the next election is more than 45 days away from the vacancy, an appointment must occur and a special election must be held as soon as possible, in which the new incumbent may or may not take part in.

What difference do you think the extra fifteen days make?
None in particular, just that 60 days seems a bit long to me and 28 too short. Just floating it.
I'm inclined to favor a principle vote on the matter. I'd prefer leaving it to the governor's approval with the legislatures approval - I see 60 days (or 8 weeks) or special as a reasonable "middle ground" between the two sides of the coin, not only for strengthening the executive and legislative branches, but also so we don't have an over-saturation of elections.
This also seems reasonable.

[3] Legislative Approval

[2] Special Election

[1] Special Election before a certain time threshold, Legislative Approval after

I'll let Leinad rule, but Special Election before threshold/Legislative Approval after has passed.

I would be fine if we just went down the middle on 7 avoiding a vote, but either way.
I'd prefer 6, but I wouldn't mind if we had 7.

Good. Friday night it is, unless that doesn't work well for Peebs or Tmth.
It works well for me. Not so sure on tmth's part, though.
My thoughts on the issue seem to fall squarely in line with NeverAgain's.

So, is that a majority fine with 8 and 2? Peebs says her "thoughts on the issue seem to fall squarely in line with NeverAgain's," although "the issue" is somewhat vague. Sorry if this seems pedantic, but I'd rather not simply assume that someone is for something they are not.

Well, my thoughts are 8 and 2 are suitable. I believe Ms. Peebs' ideas are the same.
I was intending to imply that I agreed that I'd prefer 6 & 2, but 8 and 2 are fine.

So the June '16 Senate booth should technically be opened now.

I believe it is EST, like previous elections, so it should open in ~8 minutes.
Ah. I'll wait to vote before going to bed.
