Carter wins reelection in 1980 just barely, partly by dumping Mondale from the ticket and replacing him with Fritz Hollings to double down on a southern strategy. After such a narrow victory he becomes more popular throughout his second term as the economy improves. Meanwhile the right-wing of the GOP is blamed for losing in 80, Reaganites are purged from the party and the GOP nominates dark horse Minnesota governor Al Quie in 1984 after a heated primary battle who just barely manages to hold onto his homestate while losing to the Hollings-Glenn ticket in a massive landslide.
