I think Ford had a sort of appeal hard to understand. He was honest, he was kind, he was competent. His and Betty Ford's advocacy on breast cancer and alcoholism saved hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of lives.

Good point, these qualities are a big advantage to candidates seeking the Republican nomination today, as evidenced by the 2016 election.

None of them personified it like Ford did. No other President that I know of has so directly saved so many lives.
