I could see him contesting Arkansas and Missouri as well, forcing Douglas to focus on the North.

142: Abraham Lincoln/Cassius Clay
62: Sam Houston/John Crittenden or John Bell
58: John Breckinridge/Joseph Lane
34: Stephen Douglas/Horatio Seymour
7: Sam Houston/Horatio Seymour

I imagine Houston is elected in the House and Clay is elected in the Senate.

When Houston dies, Clay becomes President, causing the succession of every IOTL Confederate state, probably plus Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia, and maybe even Maryland and Delaware. Clay immediately calls upon Houston's inner circle, finding several potential generals and one major potential power player: Houston's brother-in-law and Cherokee chief John Rogers.
