Carter's ousting makes Kennedy look like an extremist.

37: Ted Kennedy/Scoop Jackson - 37.0%
John Rarick/Alfred "Red" W. Bethea - 3.5%

Ronald Reagan / Bob Dole - 400 EVs
Ted Kennedy / Eugene McCarthy - 126 EVs
Jimmy Carter / Walter Mondale - 12 EVs

Why does Carter run third party ,would he really want to sink any hope  Kennedy has against Reagan !

He didn't run as third-party, he won as a write-in in his home-state.

In that case, I think a Jimmy Carter/Reubin Askew ticket would be more realistic: two New South Governors.
