He has stood up for what he believes at times when it wasn't very popular with the establishment. He's far from a hack.

He is the establishment. Just your standard-issue, orthodox conservative Republican.

That template can work both ways.

Does that make Dean a hack? Kennedy?  Edwards? Hillary?

I'm not a fan of machine politicians on either side of the aisle. And yes, Dean, Kennedy, Edwards, and Hillary are all hacks as well.

Most politicians vote strictly in line with their party. For that reason, I'm a fan of more independent partisans.

And maybe I should clarify that it's not necessarily their ideology that bothers me- it's that they vote in lockstep with the party leadership. That means they can take one position on something one week, and then reverse it a week later. I like people with core principles.
