As far as economic influence goes, I have seen evidence that in the U.S. the abortion rate tends to decline whenever the economy is strong for extended periods.

Hell, the abortion rate dropped significantly under Clinton and has risen under Bush, I believe.  Targetting the socioeconomic root is the key to cleaning up the abortion blight.
