He was liked by the establishment and had experience.

He would've been in the top tier if he won re-election.

To think that 8000 Virginia voters may have changed the course of history as we know it.
Not really, even if the guy would have squeezed out a victory it would have been phyrric.  His image was tarnished by the campaign itself.
