I wouldn't describe him as evil, but as paranoid. Watergate was unnessecary, because he was gonna win 1972 anyway. This behavior and Actions were a reult of his 1960 loss; an election, of which Nixon was convinced, that it was stolen from him by voter fraud. After that, he thought that just everyone (especially the east-coast liberal establishment and media) was against him. He was absolutely paranoid, but clever at the same time.
So, Nixon did bad things, he broke the law, but others did too (Iran Contra as an example). On the other hand, he had great successes like détente. He was pragmatic thinker of foreign policy and way way better than other succeeding presidents. No comparison to W, who proved to be a disaster. And Nixon’s domestic policy wasn’t bad either. Especially on environmental protection his administration deserves great credit.
