That may be Mark Green's stated reason, but his real reason for opposing 8-1 is likely that he wouldn't represent Williamson County anymore (his home is up in Clarksville).  As for why he would want to represent WillCo, he has major statewide ambitions, so he wants to represent the major GOP donors that live there.

Even though I support a 7-1 map (particularly in light of what's happened in other states), the idea of a pro-gerrymandering rally is hilarious!

Interesting that the suburban Republicans seemed to be more in favor of 7-1 than the rural Republicans.  I think this might be another example of how suburban Republicans are, in some respects, actually more ideologically conservative than rural Republicans, especially in a "movement conservative" sense.
