Genesee is actually more than two thirds white and not really a large metro.   In the past the African American vote did help the Dems, but the real source of strength in the county for Dems was union turnout,  which were largely white working class.

It's pretty much just the city of Flint that votes heavily Democrat now,  with all of the outer suburbs voting Republican.   It's pretty much the exact same scenario you see in the rest of the country.
