There is a small group of people in the country that genuinely support conservatism (small government, low taxes for rich, deregulation, and all the social conservative stuff too), but they make up about ~10-20% of the Republican electorate.  

The vast majority of people who vote Republican do so as a "counter-revolution" method in that they fear the change that is coming to the country and fear losing whatever privileges the old system gave them.

...and when push comes to shove that vast majority really doesn't give a sh!t about conservative principles or ideology....as proven by the nomination of Trump.

What Southern Republicans? There were literally zero Southern Republicans in the Senate.

In any case, it's been well established that the Democrat party is the party of racists due to their opposition to the Civil Rights bill.

The 1964 Civil Rights bill was passed while there were 66 Democrats in the Senate, 258 Democrats in the House, and a Democrat in the White House.

How in the heck did a racist party let a civil rights act become law with such commanding majorities at the time??
