"We are a federal republic, not a popular republic. As a result, we can’t just think in national terms on everything and forget about the states. States matter in our separation of powers, and they have enough significance that it should, and does, matter what state you cast you vote in. That’s is how things ought to be under our national order. We vote as citizens who reside in our individual states, and that is how things are in our democracy. That’s how things are currently done, that’s how things have always been done, that’s how things should be done. Our system’s stability (propped up by the current state of affairs given to us by the founding fathers) is the envy of the world. I’m not against the idea of tinkering with it in and of itself, but we should not talk about changing it based off just one or two elections and without enough proper thought as to what the consequences would be."
