On the one hand, Helms didn't let the leftists in Washington (back in the 1970s, Congress was practically Marxist) change the fundamental thrust of his political outlook. That took courage (or bullheadedness, either one).

On the other hand, he seemed to go out of his way to provoke even his own supporters with what is best described as "abrasiveness." Then again, those who he had to contend against in the Senate were just as obnoxious. That's politics.
