It's funny that a former Republican is the one who most fits the GOP stereotype of liberals being "pinkos" in this case. Chafee is just clueless.
Liberal Republicans tend to best fit conservatives' fears. Bloomberg's "pop ban" and attempt to bring gun control to the national fore are good examples. They also tend to have the privileged background to allow for fearmongering against "trust fund socialists" or somesuch. They're the perfect opponent.
